Do's and Don'ts

According to the Yellow Ribbon Suicide Prevention Program( R)...

  Do:

  • Realize that the future won't be the same without you.

  • Seek help immediately if you feel overwhelmed!

  • Find someone you can talk to; parents, friends, pastor/priest, youth leader, coaches, teachers, liaison officers, crisis intervention, etc.

  • Get involved with youth groups, church, school activities, volunteer work, hobbies, etc.

  • Avoid using alcohol and/or drugs:
-it is a temporary escape that avoids finding a real solution
-it makes you less likely to think before you act

  • Trust that your future holds friendships, love, happiness and self-worth.

  • Grab someone you care about and do the things that make you laugh.

  Don't:

  • Don't tolerate physical, emotional or sexual abuse from anyone.

  • Don't choose suicide--problems are temporary, but suicide is permanent.
