General Warning Signs of Suicide:

  • Sleep disturbance
  • Appetite disturbance
  • Obsessive worry about job or school performance (whether real or perceived). It is the perception they have of themselves that matters.           
  • Talking about suicide and/or preoccupation with death and dying
  • Previous suicide attempt and/or rehearsing suicide attempts
  • Taking unnecessary risks like driving recklessly, drinking and driving, or having risky sex
  • Increased use of alcohol and other drugs
  • Noticeable changes in personality; unrelenting low mood
  • Withdrawal from friends and family; isolation
  • Comments like “I won’t be a burden much longer” or “I can’t take this pain much longer”
  • Sudden intolerance of personal praise or rewards
  • Giving away possessions
  • Sudden cheerfulness after period of depression
  • Lack of interest in things they used to enjoy
  • Increased sadness, anxiety, irritability, boredom, restlessness, suspicion, and/or agitation Abrupt decline in grades or obsessive worry about job performance
  • Frequent physical complaints like headaches, leg pains, stomachaches, or inner tension
