According to the Wisconsin Department of Health & Family Services, in 2007 throughout Wisconsin, 724 people died by suicide; 199 died by homicide.  Of the deaths by suicide, 47 percent were due to firearms.  Men aged 45-65 comprised 220 of the 724 deaths.  Suicide is the second leading cause of death in youth.

Suicide Facts:

  • In 2001 Oshkosh averaged 7 deaths.

  • Oshkosh had 5 teen suicides within a 13-month period, 7 in 24 months.

  • Suicide is the second leading cause of death among people ages 15-24 in Wisconsin.

  • Suicide is 3 times more prevalent than homicide in Wisconsin.

  • Winnebago County averages over 20 suicides per year by people of all ages.

  • Most suicides are impulsive acts.

  • Many millions of hours are spent by survivors trying to cope with their loss. The lives of those left behind…friends, parents, siblings and many others…will never be the same.

  • Suicide is 2 to 3 times higher for GLBT youth.

  • Suicide victims are not trying to end their lives…they’re trying to end their pain.

  • Suicides are preventable, if people get help.

  • Every person at risk deserves help.
